The Toyota 4Runner Lives Up to High Expectations
As a full-size SUV, the Toyota 4Runner is ready for all kinds of adventures. Just by looking at it, you know that it's durable and athletic. In addition to being a tough vehicle, it's nicely appointed and can feature many high-tech components. At Riverside Toyota in Escanaba, we've been impressed by how the 4Runner has continued to stand out in a crowded market. The 2021 model year has plenty of advanced components, like standard LED. headlights and an attractive infotainment system.
The 4Runner was built with challenges in mind. It has a sturdy frame and 9.6 inches of ground clearance. It can be set up with a locking rear differential so that you can handle rugged terrain more easily. If things are difficult, the available Crawl Control program can be engaged to make necessary adjustments to the throttle and brakes as you try to maintain a steady pace. Some trims have a Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System so that they can keep the ride smooth while you clear rocks or drive over ruts in the trail. If any debris is kicked up, you'll be glad to have skid plates protecting your engine and other components. Many models have a Multi-Terrain Select program, in which you can set up your SUV for success according to what terrain you're traveling through. The 4Runner can have a 4x2 drivetrain, or it can be set up with either a part-time or a full-time 4WD system so that slippery conditions can be handled without issue.
Powering the 4Runner is a fairly large engine. It's a V6 with a displacement of four liters, and it gives the SUV 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque. This engine works together with a five-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission.
We carry several trims of the 4Runner. Listed in order of affordability, they are the:
- SR5
- Trail Special Edition
- SR5 Premium
- TRD Off-Road
- TRD Off-Road Premium
- Venture Special Edition
- Limited
- Nightshade Special Edition
- TRD Pro
As you'd imagine, those trims at the top of the lineup are decked out with all sorts of high-end features. They could feature leather seats, navigation, premium audio systems, and special exterior accents. The TRD. Pro has special TRD wheels, skid plates, a roof rack, and the Nightshade Special Edition has a dark, aggressive look. The Venture Special Edition is similar in feel, and it comes standard with a Yakima MegaWarrior cargo basket. With the Limited, there are many upscale components in the cabin, and people will enjoy the sophistication of this model.
The T.R.D. Off-Road and TRD. Off-Road Premium both are outfitted with part-time 4WD systems, Crawl Control, and 17-inch wheels. The latter model has several nicer features, such as heated side mirrors, smart key entry, and SofTex upholstery.
At the beginning of the lineup, there are still plenty of things to appreciate. Smartphone compatibility and driver-assist technologies are both standard. The Trail Special Edition has some unique features, like an accessory cooler that can fit in the back and a Yakima LoadWarrior cargo basket for the roof. The SR5 Premium, like some of our other trims, can have a third row to increase total seating capacity to seven. Like the TRD. Off-Road Premium, this model has SofTex seats, smart key entry and push-button start, and other convenient amenities.
Whether you have a third row or not, you'll have a maximum cargo capacity of nearly 90 cubic feet. You can do so much with this space, whether you need it for your gear or passengers. Plus, the 4Runner has a towing capacity of 5,000 pounds.
One last thing we want to mention is regarding the infotainment system. This Toyota comes standard with an eight-inch touchscreen, smartphone compatibility, Amazon Alexa, and SiriusXM. An enhanced package will give you navigation and JBL speakers.
